Bitcoin price holds steady as S&P 500 plunges to 110-day low

Image
The S&P 500 dropped to a 110-day low as the market digests what “higher for longer” means for stocks. Will Bitcoin begin to chart its own path? On Sept. 20, the Federal Reserve delivered a message that reverberated through financial markets: interest rates are expected to remain at their highest level in over two decades, and possibly for longer than most market participants’ expectations. This attitude comes against the backdrop of stubbornly high inflation, with the core inflation rate hovering at 4.2%, well above the central bank's 2% target, and unemployment at record lows.  As investors grapple with this new reality, a pressing question arises: Will the S&P 500 and Bitcoin (BTC) continue to underperform in the face of a tighter monetary policy? The impact of the Fed's decision was swift and severe. The S&P 500 plunged to its lowest level in 110 days, signaling growing unease among investors. Bitcoin and select altcoins continue to face selling at higher levels, a sign that the bears have not yet given up. The cryptocurrency market witnessed sharp volatility on April 26 on rumors that large sums of Bitcoin (BTC) were on the move from the wallets linked to the defunct cryptocurrency exchange Mt. Gox and the United States government. A minor positive is that Bitcoin and select altcoins held their respective support levels. After Bitcoin’s sharp rally in 2023, some traders seem to be planning to book profits. Coinglass reported that the Bitcoin balance held at Binance soared by 50,000 Bitcoin in the past 30 days. While this could add to short-term pressure, bulls can take solace because the increase is not identical across exchanges. Coinglass said that the aggregate increase of Bitcoin balance across exchanges was 14,000 Bitcoin. Daily cryptocurrency market performance. Ronin (RON) bags a 500% gain as the gaming-focused project approaches a major upgrade

Image
Ronin Network’s upcoming shift to a more decentralized consensus mechanism and partnerships with gaming studios has brought significant gains for the project’s RON token. Ronin Network’s native token RON recorded 5x gains since the start of the year thanks to its plans to shift to a Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) consensus mechanism and expand its gaming portfolio beyond Axie Infinity. The gaming-focused layer-2 Ethereum blockchain will change its current Proof-of-Authority to the DPoS consensus mechanism on April 12. The previous mechanism had around six to nine participants securing and validating transactions on the network, which put the network at a centralization risk. It was the leading cause of the $650 million hack from the Ronin network on March 29, 2022. The new DPoS consensus mechanism allows RON stakers to earn from the network’s fees and vote on the set of validators operating the network. Additionally, Sky Mavis, the team behind Axie Infinity and the Ronin Network, is...

What is opportunity cost? A definition and examples

Image
Opportunity cost is the potential benefit that is missed out on when choosing one option over another. Opportunity cost, explained Opportunity cost is a concept in economics that refers to the value of the next best alternative that is forgone when making a choice — i.e., the cost of the best alternative that is not chosen. Consider the scenario when you have a limited budget and are debating between buying a new laptop or going on vacation. The value of the vacation you could have taken with the same amount of money would be the opportunity cost if you decide to buy the laptop. Similarly, if you decide to take the vacation, the opportunity cost would be the laptop you could have purchased with the same amount of money. Everyone is gambling, all the time. The "risk takers" have the courage to attempt something and gamble with the possibility of failure. The "risk averse" avoid failure, but gamble with the opportunity cost of what they could have achieved—had they...

Blur runs after OpenSea market share, but its success depends on upcoming governance proposals

Blur, a NFT marketplace, has seen its trading volumes and total sell-side liquidity skyrocket since conducting an airdrop on Feb. 14, 2023. The reason for the spike could be the start of season 2 airdrops, where 10% of BLUR token’s total supply will be distributed to certain users based on their activity. Blockchain security firm Peckshield has raised the alarm after finding dozens of tokens purporting to be related to artificial intelligence (AI) powered chatbot ChatGPT. In a Feb. 20 post, the firm revealed at least three "BingChatGPT" tokens appear to be part of honeypot schemes — a smart contract that tricks a user into sending Ethereum (ETH), which the attacker then traps and retrieves. Some of the addresses reportedly associated with the BingChatGPT tokens. Source: PeckShield According to Peckshield, at least two of the tokens identified have already lost nearly 100% of their value, while a third is at a 65% loss — in what is often referred to as a “pump and dump” scheme or “rug pull.” A pump-and-dump scheme typically involves the creators orchestrating a campaign of misleading statements and hype to persuade investors into purchasing tok...
